We had a conversation about this at a recent management meeting there is some information I thought I'd pass on. WEBSep 19, 2013 · Too little power to start the drum turning. Try a car battery, a bigger PSU or try starting at 2v and turn it up to 14v over say 10 seconds. Without a bigger supply or less lead something is going to fail. You could reduce the rotating mass by using ceramic media.

You may be able to find a suitable motor from industrial surplus. While hand drill motors tend to be unsuitable, drill press motors are often ideal.

WEBPosted January 21, 2014. I just did my first BP run in my new ball mill, and ran into the problem of the powder caking in the mill. I have a 1 gallon jar with 30# of 1/2 inch lead ball media, which fills the jar half full. The total powder charge is 600gm, about 1 qt in volume. The KNO3, S, willow coal were all airfloat milled before mixing.

WEBAug 25, 2013 · It would only be 34hrs in the mill if milling all the components together. Then on top of saving 8 hours of milling, you would get better mixing of the chems also. If you are going to mix stuff, at the least, use a screen. 3040 mesh is good for intimate mixing, running the comp through the screen at least 3 times.

WEBI have been using the .50 cal lead balls for years never had an issue with contamination in my BP. In a small drum ball mill [like the Harbor Freight 1 2 drum models] you really aren't doing a lot of damage in the tumbling process since it is such a small drum and doesn't require a very long run time per batch of BP.

Obviously, a ball mill requires a jar or jars enough grinding media to fill one or several 50%. Jar size dictates the amount of grinding media you will need. Grinding media often costs as much as the mill (sometimes more).
